Essex business awards can do more for you than fill a shelf. A shortlist place or win can earn a website link, new reviews, and fresh Google Business Profile posts. This guide lists the awards and events worth entering in 2026 and 2027, and how to use each one.
Enter a free council-run award near you. The Rochford District Business Awards 2027 close at 9 am on 7 December 2026. Go to local events such as the Festival of Business on 11 November 2026. Then turn each one into a link, reviews, and Google Business Profile posts. Winning won’t lift your rankings by itself. The links and reviews that follow can.
Why do Essex business awards help your local search visibility?
Awards create the signals Google uses to judge how well known a local business is.
- Links and reviews build prominence. Google says prominence is “based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have” (Google Business Profile Help).
- AI answers rely on other websites. In a July 2026 study reported by Search Engine Journal, about 77% of AI citations for branded searches came from other sites. The study isn’t UK-specific.
- Some Essex awards link to winners. The Colchester Business Awards 2026 winners page links to each winner’s website.

Essex awards that aren’t running right now
If you’re looking for an Essex award you’ve entered or heard of before, check that it’s still running. We checked these on 26 October 2026, and none of them has a round that Essex businesses can enter right now.
Essex Countywide Business Awards
Newsquest, which publishes the Echo and the Gazette, runs these awards. It has paused them while it reviews the programme, and there are no dates for 2027 yet.
The Small Business Awards (Essex)
The Small Business Awards held their last Essex final in April 2024. They haven’t run an Essex round since then.
East of England Tourism Awards
The regional tourism awards for 2027 are the Suffolk & Norfolk Tourism Awards, and their pages don’t mention Essex. For now, there’s no regional tourism award that Essex businesses can enter.
Awards we couldn’t find
We found no council-run business awards for Southend, Thurrock, Basildon, Braintree, or Maldon. We also found no Essex awards for women in business, family businesses, or tech firms. If you know of one we’ve missed, let us know and we’ll add it.
What can an award do for your SEO, and what can’t it?
What an award does well
- Earns a link when the organiser lists finalists or winners
- Gives local press a reason to mention you
- Gives you an honest reason to ask customers for reviews
What an award won’t do
- Lift your rankings on its own. The links and reviews it leads to do that
- Guarantee a link. Rochford, Castle Point, Uttlesford, and Harlow list winners as plain text
- Fix a weak profile. If you can’t find yourself on Maps, read why your business is not showing on Google Maps

How do you turn an Essex award or event into links, reviews, and visibility?
- Pick a local award your customers know. A council or chamber award in your area carries more weight with local customers than a national one.
- Write the entry like a news story. Use real figures and a customer example. You’ll reuse the same text later.
- Ask about a link once you’re shortlisted. Many organisers list finalists, and some link to each finalist’s website.
- Tell local press. Send a short release with a photo when you’re shortlisted, and again if you win. Our content writing team can draft it.
- Share the news on your website and Google Business Profile. Do it within a week. Our Google Business Profile guide covers posts and photos.
- Ask every recent customer for a review. Use the news as your reason, and ask everyone the same way.
- Get your website ready for new visitors. Make sure people can see what you do and how to contact you. Your name, address, and phone number should match your Google Business Profile. A free SEO audit shows what’s holding your site back.
The Rochford awards cost nothing to enter. 3 SME Essex Business Awards entries cost £34.50 + VAT (£41.40 including VAT). Steps 5 to 7 pay off whether you win or not.
What rules apply to award claims, reviews, and event contacts?
- Award claims. Say what you won, who gave it, and when. If you were shortlisted, say “finalist” (ASA).
- Reviews. Don’t offer discounts or rewards for reviews, and ask every customer the same way (Google’s review policy, CMA fake reviews guidance).
- Sponsorship links. Paid links must carry rel=”sponsored” or rel=”nofollow” (Google Search Central).
- Event contacts. You can email staff at limited companies without consent if you say who you are and offer an opt-out. Sole traders need consent or the soft opt-in (ICO).
Frequently asked questions about Essex business awards
Are Essex small business awards free to enter?
Many are. The Rochford District Business Awards 2027 are free. Commercial awards often charge, so check entry, acceptance, and trophy fees first.
Does winning an award improve my Google ranking?
Not directly. Google ranks local businesses on relevance, distance, and prominence. An award helps when it leads to links and reviews, which count towards prominence.
Can a new business enter an Essex business award?
Yes. The Rochford awards have a New Business of the Year category, and new businesses don’t need 12 months of trading. Check each award’s rules before you enter.
