You’ve set up your Google Business Profile, but when you search on Google Maps, your business isn’t there. For local businesses in Essex, from Chelmsford and Basildon to Colchester and Southend, that means missed calls and jobs going to competitors down the road.
| Most businesses don’t show on Google Maps because the profile isn’t verified yet, Google is still processing it, the profile is suspended, or the address setup breaks Google’s rules. If your profile is live, you may be too far from the person searching, or competitors nearby may have more complete and more active profiles. |
What Happens After You Verify Your Google Business Profile?
Verification tells Google that your business is real and that you manage it. It doesn’t switch your listing on straight away, and it doesn’t guarantee you a place in the map pack.
After you verify, Google still runs its own checks. During this time, your dashboard may show messages such as “Google is processing your verification” or “Not publicly visible”. Google keeps your details, photos, and reviews, but customers can’t see the listing yet.
A new profile also often appears on Google Maps before it shows in normal Google Search results. Volunteer experts on Google’s Business Profile help forum point this out regularly.
Most causes are easy to find and fix. Here’s what to check.
First, Check If You’re Really Missing
Searching on your own phone at your own premises gives a misleading result. Try these checks on Google Maps instead:
- Search your business name. If you don’t appear, you have a profile problem.
- Search your service plus your town, such as “plumber Chelmsford”. If you only appear for your name, you have a ranking problem.
- Ask a friend in a nearby town, such as Braintree or Billericay, to run the same search.
Then log in to your business profile and read the status message at the top.

How Long Does It Take to Show Up on Google Maps After Verification?
Google doesn’t publish one fixed timescale. Use this as a rough guide:
| Situation | Typical wait |
|---|---|
| Newly verified profile with no issues | A few days to around two weeks |
| Video verification under review | Up to 5 business days (Google’s own guidance) |
| Changes to name, address, or category after verification | Days to a few weeks, sometimes with another verification |
| Suspension appeal | No published timescale. Often a couple of weeks or more |
| Better rankings after work on reviews, citations, and your website | Weeks to months |
If you’ve waited three to four weeks with no change and no clear status message, contact Google Business Profile support.
7 Reasons Your Business Isn’t Showing on Google Maps
1. Your profile isn’t verified, or Google is still processing it.
Google won’t show an unverified profile. Even after verification, the listing can take a few days to around two weeks to appear. Messages like “Google is processing your verification” or “Not publicly visible” mean you need to wait. Avoid editing the profile during this time, as changes can restart Google’s checks.

2. Your video verification failed.
Google asks for one continuous video of at least 30 seconds. It needs to show your location, your business (permanent signage or tools and a branded van for trades), and proof that you manage it, such as opening a till or showing an invoice. Videos often fail when the business name or the area isn’t clear. Check the reasons Google gives, then record again. Google’s video verification guide lists what to include.
| For Essex tip: If you run a trade from home in Danbury, Writtle or Great Baddow, film the nearest street sign and a local landmark, then show your van, your tools and a recent invoice. Set the profile up as a service-area business rather than a shop. |
3. Your profile is suspended.
Google suspends profiles that break its guidelines, often by accident. Check your dashboard for a notice, fix the cause, then send a reinstatement request with evidence such as a utility bill or photos of your signage. Don’t create a new profile instead, as that usually makes things worse.
4. Your address setup breaks. Google’s rules
If you visit customers, you’re a service-area business. Hide your home address and list the towns you cover. Google’s guidelines don’t allow virtual offices or P.O. boxes, so a registered office address in Chelmsford won’t work if you actually work from home in Witham.
5. A duplicate listing is in the way
If you moved premises, took over a business, or had a listing created years ago, Google may be showing the wrong one or hiding both. Search Maps for your business name and phone number, then claim or remove any duplicate. Check business directories too, as duplicate or messy local citations confuse Google.
6. Your category or business name is wrong
Categories decide which searches you can appear for. A roofer listed under “Home improvement” will struggle to show up for “roofer near me”, so pick the most specific primary category for your main service, such as “Roofing contractor”, then add secondary categories for your other services. Keep your business name exactly as it appears on your signage. Adding keywords like “Best Roofer Essex” breaks Google’s rules and can get you suspended.
7. You’re too far from the person searching
Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence. A business based in Chelmsford will find it easier to appear for searches in Chelmsford than in Colchester or Southend. Adding more service areas doesn’t change this. Reviews, town pages on your website and local link building help you reach further.
